1st XI vs Hampshire Academy 1st XI
Bashley’s 1st XI suffered a frustrating defeat against Hampshire Academy, who chased down 182 with relative comfort in the end. Electing to field, Hampshire Academy restricted Bashley to 181 all out, with Jack Stearman’s 56 the innings’ standout knock. Ben Walker contributed a solid 34 at the top of the order, and Patrick Lewis added 28 in the middle, but wickets fell too regularly to build a truly competitive total. Dylan Kettle and Charlie Foreshaw were the pick of the Academy’s bowlers, each claiming 3 wickets in controlled spells.
In reply, Hampshire Academy’s Oliver Williams set the platform with an impressive 61, and despite Jayden Gengan picking up 2 wickets to keep Bashley in the game, the target never looked beyond the Academy’s reach. Jensen Mogridge finished unbeaten on 32 to guide his side home with nearly 13 overs to spare, sealing a comfortable 6-wicket victory.
It was a disappointing afternoon for Bashley’s 1st XI — a below-par total ultimately proving the difference — though Kieran Pardey’s unbeaten 20 and some fight from the lower order showed there was no shortage of effort on the day.
2nd XI vs Gosport 1st XI
Bashley’s 2nd XI faced a tough challenge against a strong Gosport Borough 1st XI side, who won the toss and posted a formidable 300/7 from their 50 overs. The visitors batted consistently throughout, with Charlie Bignell top-scoring on 71, well supported by Mark Toogood (64), Lee Harrop (60) and a quickfire 42 from Gavin King late in the innings. For Bashley, Nrupadh Mahesh was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets, while Nick Gargaro and Phil Morris chipped in with one apiece.
Chasing 301, Bashley’s innings was largely held together by a fighting 94 from Phil Morris, who battled hard through the middle and lower order to give the chase some respectability. However, wickets fell too regularly around him and despite a lively late cameo from Xavier Deacon (24 not out), Bashley were bowled out for 220 in the final over. Sampath Prathapasinghe was Gosport’s standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for just 26 runs from 10 overs.
3rd XI vs Bramshaw 1st XI
Bashley’s 3rd XI fell to a heavy defeat against Bramshaw CC, despite posting a respectable 220/8 from their 45 overs. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Bashley showed good resilience throughout their innings, with Oscar Burton impressing on his 3rd XI debut with 47, well supported by the experienced Chris Gates who finished unbeaten on 35. That platform allowed Kris Laurent to cut loose late in the innings, smashing a rapid 39 off just 17 balls to push Bashley to a competitive total.
In reply, Bramshaw were ruthless. Daniel Manning was the pick of Bashley’s bowlers, finding good control with the new ball, while Jomy Jose — last year’s leading wicket taker — provided a brief moment of hope with two wickets in two balls. However, Bramshaw captain Tom Arnold (58*) and opener J Coombs (110*) were simply too good on the day, putting on a match-winning partnership to steer their side home with ease, reaching 222/2 in just 25.3 overs.
A tough afternoon for Bashley, but there were plenty of positives to take — particularly from the younger players who showed real promise. A hard-earned 7 points on the board in their first game in Division 3A following last season’s promotion is a foundation to build on.
4th XI vs Bournemouth 6th XI
Bashley (Rydal) 4th XI secured a dominant victory over Bournemouth CC 6th XI, driven by an exceptional batting display. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Paul Macdonald was the star of the show, striking a superb 105 off just 75 balls to lay the foundation. He was well supported by a fluent 54 from Piers Bollard and a brutal late cameo from James Macdonald, who finished unbeaten on 67 off 41 balls to drive Bashley to an imposing 293/8 from their 40 overs. Robert Franks was Bournemouth’s most effective bowler, picking up 3 wickets in an otherwise tough afternoon for their attack.
Chasing 294, Bournemouth never really got going. Toby Clist top-scored with 25 but there was little resistance down the order as the Bashley bowlers shared the spoils effectively. Felix Burton was outstanding, returning figures of 3-20 from 8 overs, while Jonathan Worsfold and Isaac Worsfold claimed 3 wickets each to bowl Bournemouth out for 139, wrapping up a convincing 154-run win for Bashley.
