Michael Porter grafted an unbeaten half-century to guide Bashley (Rydal) to a five-wicket win over the Hampshire Academy – the second win placing them joint top of the embryo ECB Southern Premier Division table.

Bashley successfully chased down an Academy total of 189 on a pitch which Porter described as “one on which you had to get your head down and graft.”
“It certainly wasn’t a 190 surface, but batsmen needed to apply themselves to get runs.”

A double Dan Goodey strike and one from Brad Currie (who both finished with 2-24) had the Academy youngsters wobbling at 22-3, before Brad Taylor (31) and the impressive George Metzger (47) improved matters.Josh Digby (3-27) dropped the county side deeper into the mire at 124-7 before Hartley Wintney prospect Harry Broderick (36) guided the innings to 189 all out.

Bashley were never seriously troubled as they chased down the target, all the top order making starts – Tim Taylor (25) and Ben Walker (31) – but Porter needed to get his head down with an unbeaten 54 (seven fours) to secure the victory. Tom Jacques made a handy 22.
