Bashley batted first and once again, Steve Kemp and Neil Pardoe put on 100 for the first wicket. The partnership was dominated by Pardoe who fell for a well made 68. Kemp battled on bravely after suffering a painful blow to the head, not by the ball, but by his own bat whilst avoiding being stumped. He started to look more fluent as his hangover wore off, however, he was out caught the ball after getting to 50. Youth then took over as Luke Stubbington (41) and the stylish Paul Conway (38) put on 75 in 12 overs. Bashley gained maximum batting points in a total of 245-4.
Mudeford never looked like threatening the bashley total as all the bowlers contributed. Paul Conway (3-35) completed a fine all round performance, whilst Paul Kemp also took 3 wickets during a spell of 12 injury free overs. With 2 wickets required and with the overs running out, Steve Ransom brought himself on to chuck a few grenades. Sean Read was introduced for his first bowl in senior cricket and duly took the final wicket to wrap up a comprehensive victory for Bashley.
Bashley (Rydal) 5th XI v Ellingham 3rd XI - 10th May 2008
Under the guidance of new skipper and master tactician, Steve Ransom, the fifths began their campaign at Ellingham. Batting first, the Bashley openers showed no sign of early season rustiness as the runs flowed. Neil Pardoe, playing his first game for Bashley, was particularly severe on anything short and with Steve Kemp looking comfortable at the other end, a sizable total looked likely. Pardoe moved effortlessly passed 100, but with the score on 199, inexplicably, he missed one and was bowled. Kemp continued, reaping the rewards of a strict winter fitness regime and he too scored a century, his first since 1981 (off Swampy's bowling in the back garden). Kemp departed soon after and it was left to brother Paul (37*), playing some sumptuous slogs and moos, to take the score up to something between 278 and 298 for 6. Who'd have thought it, a side with a combined total of 64 GCSEs, 17 A levels, 2 degrees, aPhD and a GCE in Maths & Art, and we still can't get the batting and bowling totals in the scorebook within 20 runs of each other.
At tea the captains decided to take a mid point for the score and so it came to pass that the Bashley total was 288-6. Anyway, what difference would it make as Bashley had scored enough to make the discrepancy acedemic...
...with Ellingham 220-5 with 10 overs to go, earlier events took on greater significance. However, in reality, the bowling was somewhat wayward and it was this that allowed Ellingham to get back into the match. The one exception was Sam Scott who bowled a tidy opening spell and it was to him that the skipper turned to when the game seemed to be slipping away. Scott took the last 5 wickets to finish with deserved figures of 5-32.
Bashley Rydal CC 5th Team vs Swan Green 2nd Team on 14 July 07
Having recorded a good win the previous Saturday beating Milford 2nds by 35 runs the 5ths (with 5 under 15 players) were looking forward to a test of their progress in the return fixture against second in the league Swan Green.
Bash were invited to bat and openers Kemp and J Ransom started cautiously. With the score on 11 Kemp offered a dolly but was dropped. This proved costly as Kemp stroked the ball to all parts of the ground before he was caught behind for 47.
Ian Davies then joined 16 year old Ransom and enjoyed his promotion up the order showing the youngsters how to take quick singles. Davies departed for a quick fire 22. Ransom took responsibility and moved the score up to 130 for 3 off 27 overs before being bowled for a well constructed 45.
Swan Green then put the brakes on as Bash had a bit of a wobble and lost 2 quick wickets. Steve Ransom 27no. then joined Andrew Argyll and played some sensible cricket taking the score to 173 for 6 before Argyll was bowled by R Bega for 28. With 5 over to go Sam Scott 15 n.o, ensured the Bash tail wagged and took the score to 208 for 6. Both teams then enjoyed another sumptuous Georgie Pardey tea.
Rivoire then opened the bowling and after producing a snorter which Tuck managed to keep down then beat Tuck for pace the next delivery. 16 fo1 soon became 68 for 5 as Scott (6 overs 1 for 16) and Stubbington (8 overs 2 for 31) varied their bowling and Bash took their catches and kept their fielding tight.
Skipper Orton was then joined by McDonald and both batsman were particularly severe on any loose bowling and began to play with ease.
Fraser Dexter Smith (5 overs 1 for 14) playing his first game for Bash then produced a fine spell of bowling taking the important wicket of McDonald (16). Another inspired bowling change saw S Ransom with his first ball entice the dangerous Orton to play on for 27. With the score on 116 for 7 Bash did not let up and despite a spirited knock by Frampton 13 no. Swan Green were eventually all out for 150. Ransom finished with fine bowling figures of 4.5 overs 4 for 10.
This was an enjoyable game of cricket played in good spirit on a good batting track. Having lost their first 4 games this young Bashley side are now playing with confidence and team spirit and are looking forward to each game.
Bashley Rydal CC 5th Team vs Cadnam 3rd Team on 2 June 07
It was a hot and sultry day at Pennington Oval Ground. Having the luxury of a full strength team Captain Davies won the toss and decided to bat. It was quickly 7 for 2 but Steve Kemp (29) and Tim Davies grafted until shortly before half way stage when the score became 59 for 3.
M Pilton (3 for 47) was getting the ball to swing prodigiously and coupled with uneven bounce on a poorly prepared wicket, batting was not easy. After 24 overs the score had progressed to 83 for 5 when Andrew Argyll (under 15) joined Tim Davies.
With the cloud cover lifting they set about the Cadnam attack and the score moved quickly to 154 for 6 before a poorly judged second run and excellent throw from Kerley on the boundary ended Argyll’s wonderful innings on 33. 13 year old Joshua Davies, playing his first match (after breaking his foot) joined Tim Davies and stroked a majestic 24 (6 x 4’s) before being caught behind from a Teague lifter (196 for 8). John Whiting admitted to being very nervous as he was possibly playing his last competitive game due to a recurring hip injury. John was wheeled in his bath chair to the wicket and continued the onslaught before being caught in the deep for 16 by Kerley. Rivoire (18 n.o.) joined Tim Davies who had batted since the second over and managed (along with the rest of the tail) to keep the strike away from Davies who eventually finished on 87 n.o. This was an innings of great maturity from Davies who has not played cricket for 3 years.Bashley's innings closed on 259 for 9. For Cadnam Dennis Batchelor was outstanding behind the wickets claiming 2 stumpings and a catch.
After tea Whiting took the first over and was promptly smashed for 2 straight 4’s by Batchelor. At end of over he found he could still move and then proceeded to run in like a thoroughbred for 7 overs showing the young Bashley players what can happen if you bowl straight. Whiting finished with 4 for 15, clean bowling 3 batsmen and removed any doubt over his fitness.
Sam Scott (2 for 14) and Joshua Davies (2 for 22) then bowled well and together with some excellent ground fielding and catching, Cadnam were eventually all out for 95.
This was the first win for Bashley 5th’s. The side has been started to enable the junior players to gain regular experience of the longer limited over game of cricket and provide a pathway through to the established and successful senior teams at the New Forest Premier league club.
