Bashley ( Rydal ) welcomed second in the league Bournemouth to the BCG for a 50 over match & on winning the toss Bournemouth elected to bat first on a good looking pitch. Bournemouth skipper, Nick Park opened with Martin Miller but Park (10) was soon bowled by Matt King & this brought his
brother James Park to the crease, the next wicket to fall was that of Miller for one & the score on 41. J. Park & S. Watkins batted steadily until Watkins straight drove a delivery from King who stuck out a size 11 boot & the ball was deflected onto the stumps with top scorer J. Park (39) out of his crease. Veteran Neil Taylor was introduced in to the attack & this slowed the scoring rate even more as he bowled his 10 overs for just 25 runs taking 2 wickets in his spell. K. Nash returned to take 2 wickets & along with King (3-45) mopped up the tail to close the Bournemouth innings on 184 all out. Once again all the bowlers stuck to their task to none more so than Richard Morris having his first post op. bowl & taking the last wicket to fall.
Bashley openers Andy Sexton & Neil Thurgood knew they had to be at the top of their game to handle the highly regarded bowling attack of Bournemouth and as the overs went by this proved to be the case with Sexton again showing his class as he drove & pulled the Bournemouth attack all round the BCG. Thurgood was also playing his shots as he scored 49 off just 56 balls which included 5 fours & 2 sixes & these two put on 162 for the first wicket. R. Armstrong joined Sexton to see Bashley home with Sexton
finishing on a superb 109 not out off 127 deliveries & needing only 33 of the alloted 50 overs. After this tremendous win Bashley now travel to champions elect Havant on Saturday where they will need to put up a similar performance against a very competitive Havant side.
Lymington v Bashley Rydal) 4 July 2009
What a difference a week makes, after last weeks disappointing defeat by Totton, Bashley arrived at Lymington Sports Ground determinned to make amends & this they did in emphatic style. Skipper Andy Neal called correctly & elected to bat first. Openers Neil Thurgood & Andy Sexton had a cautious start against the new ball attack of Simon Cook & Morgan Rushbrook & put on 28 when Thurgood received a good ball from Cook & was bowled for 5. Chris Jones joined Sexton & together they took the score to 86 when Jones was stumped off the leg spin of Ollie Kelly for 29. By now Sexton was in majestic form playing with great freedom as he & Ritchie Armstrong shared a 105 run partnership until Sexton ,108 off 169 balls which included 18 fours & 1 six, was run out by a great piece of fielding & direct hit by Christian Pain. Armstrong was then caught off the bowling of Glyn Treagus for 45 & with Nick Baker (25) & Gavin Bailiff (17) scoring quick runs near the end of the innings & Andy Neal hitting 10 off six balls the Bashley innings closed on 271-7 off 64 overs.
Bashley opening bowling pair of Matt King & Kevin Nash soon had the Lymington batsmen in trouble as Nash took the first 2 wickets to fall, that of Kelly (0) & Treagus (1) & Lymington were 13-2. Unfortunately for Bashley Nash took a nasty blow when Rushbrook drove a ball straight back & as Nash
attemted to stop it the ball smacked in to his leg & he had to be carried off the field. Veteran Don Read, who was watching, dashed home for his kit & came on as a substitute Fielder. J. Lucy joined Rushbrook but did not last long as King continued his good spell having Lucy caught behind by D. Friedman for 5 & then the prized wicket of Bryn Darbyshire, caught by Sexton for 4. At this stage
Lymington were 24-4. South African Graham Allen, making his first team debut, was then introduced in to the attack bowling his off spin he soon opened his account by bowling the dangerous Rushbrook for 15 & when Pain (17) was caught off Nick Baker it was left to Cook (22) & Tommy Barton who smacked a quick fire 56 off 44 balls to bring up a respectable score & the Lymington innings closed on 161 off 51.3 overs. This was a much improved performance by Bashley which they must carry on for the remainder of the season.
Totton & Eling v Bashley Rydal 27 June 2009
Bashley (Rydal) travelled to Southern Gardens to play Totton & Eling in an all day game & again had to make enforced changes due to injuries & holidays. Unfortunately for Bashley they came up against a Totton team on top of their game & they never gave Bashley a chance to settle into any rhythm. Skipper Andy Neal won the toss & elected to have first bowl & with the early departure of Richard Dibden for 4, bowled by Matt King, & the score on 6 it looked a good start but young Aussie Luke Towers joined David
Banks & they took the score on to 81 when Banks (33) became the first of Andy Neal's five victims (15-3-51-5). Towers was caught & bowled by Neal for 47 but D. Kenway & J. Manning took control with an eighty run partnership & with Bungay & Beresford making the most of the tiring Bashley bowling with
respective scores of 42 & 20 the Totton innings closed on 285 in the 64th over.
With such a big total on the board Totton were able to to set aggressive attacking field placings from the first ball of the Bashley reply & with Banks & Dan Goldstraw opening the bowling the batsmen were
under always under pressure to score runs. Andy Sexton in particular received a brute of a delivery from Goldstraw which took off from a length & was caught in the slips off an edge. Neil Thurgood (29) together with Chris Jones (30) took the score to 60 but after they were both out only Ritchie Armstrong (44 n.o.), making his seasonal debut back from university, showed the necessary application when facing top quality bowling from Goldstraw (4-51) & off spinner Rob Franklin (4-18 off 10.3 overs)& the Bashley innings closed on a disappointing 149 in the 46th over. This saturday local rivalry will be at the fore with Bashley visiting Lymington.
Bashley Rydal v Havant 20 June 2009
Bashley welcomed high flying Havant to the BCG for their all day game which ended in a high scoring draw. Bashley made two enforced changes with Matt King coming in for Max Waller who was on duty with Somerset & Phil Morris in for Richard Morris who is recovering from an operation. On winning
the toss Havant elected to bat first hoping to post a big score, which they duly did with all the batsmen contributing. C. Morgan was the first to depart, caught by keeper Dan Friedman off the bowling of Gavin Bailiff, for 21 & the score on 37. Ex Hampshire Lawrence Prittipaul joined B. Walker at
the crease & proceeded to hit a rapid 54 off only 51 deliveries which included 12 boundaries when he holed out to be caught by Ross Grierson off the bowling of skipper Andy Neal & the score on 103-2.B. Walker was next out bowled by the off spin of Andy Sexton for 49. Together Richard Hindley &
Oliver Jones took control & with both playing some terrific shots took the score on to 282-4 when Hindley was caught by G. Bailiff off M. King for 78. Jones finished on 79 off 72 balls as Havant declared on 304 from 63.2 overs.
The Bashley reply had a steady start with openers Neil Thurgood & Andy Sexton playing the new ball well until Havant introduced off spinner Hindley into the attack & Thurgood (21)was adjudged LBW to Hindley. Meanwhile Sexton got his head down & showed great determination to stay at
the crease as he & Chris Jones(36) took the score on to 109 when Jones became another Hindley victim. With spin operating from both ends Havant scented victory but Nick Baker also dug deep until he departed for 14 & the score on 151-3. the score soon became 154-4 & Havant really put the pressure
with fielders crowding the bat & appealing to the umpires for decisions in their favour, but Gavin Bailiff had other ideas as he took on the bowlers & powered his way to 72 n.o. off only 40 balls which included 8 fours & 5 sixes. Andy Sexton was the last batsman to be out caught off the bowling of S. Matthews for a superb 109 & the Bashley innings closed on 264-5 to remain unbeaten in the all day format.
Bournemouth v Bashley Rydal 13 June 2009
RESULT: Winning Draw to Bournemouth 181 (14) Bashley 136-8 (8)
On arrivat at Chapel Gate to play Bournemouthin the 2nd round of the all day matches, skipper Andy Neal took one look at the well watered wicket and knew on winning the toss Bashley had to bowl first. Openers for Bournemouth, Nick Park and Martin Miller got off to a steady start until
Neil Thurgood took a smart catch the bowling of Gavin Bailiff to dismiss Martin Miller for 18 and the score on 38. A. Neal then trapped James Park lbw for 10 with the score on 59. Simon Watkins joined N. Park and took the score on to 128, then with lunch nearing Max Waller found the edge of N.
Park and Simon Watkins in quick succesion with A.Neal snapping up both chances at first slip. After lunch M. Waller took control with a superb spell of leg spin bowling finishing with the figures of 18.1 - 12 - 30 - 6 and Bournemouth's innings closed on 181 from 63.1 overs.
The Bashley reply started slowly against the new ball attack of E. Denham and particularly M. Metcalfe and when A. Sexton(5) was bowled by Metcalfe it brought England u-19 Chris Jones to join N. Thurgood(15). Jones stayed cool and composed throught out his innings as wickets fell around him
accumulating an undefeated 65 off 142 balls and with Andy Neal giving dogged support they took the score to 107 with Neal scoring 18. Bashley then played for the draw and despite losing 2 quick wickets Ross Grierson who scored 5 but more importantly survived 30 deliveries together with Jones saw the
Bashley innings to a close on 136-8.
This sat. sees top of the table Havant visit the BCG and with Bashley in second place a cracking game should be in prospect.
Bashley Rydal v St Cross Symondians 6 June 2009
BASHLEY (RYDAL) 298-6 ST. CROSS 239-7
Records tumbled again for Bashley (Rydal) in the first of the all day games with St Cross the visitors to the BCG. St. Cross won the toss & elected to field first & the opening bowling pair of T. Lewis & S.
Fryer, getting movement & bounce Bashley were soon in trouble & when they were 25-5 in the eigth over of the day it looked as though an early finish was in store, but skipper Andy Neal joined Nick Baker they started slowly & worked hard to repair the damage. After lunch they then looked to accelerate
the run rate & together they made a record ECB Southen Electric Premier League sixth wicket stand of 239 which enabled Bashley to close the innnings on 298-6. Andy Neal finishing on 127n.o. which is his highest score, and Nick Baker, who is in his first season for Bashley, scoring his maiden
century.
St. Cross's reply also started badly when Kevin Nash (1-31) bowled C.Esson in the first over & when Gavin Bailiff (1-29) bowled the captain G. Worker for 12 St. Cross were 24-2. After this St. Cross decided to play for the draw & with Archie Fellowes, being the third centurion of the day scoring 109, in fine form & his team mates giving obstinate support the Bashley bowlers could not take the last three wickets needed & St. Cross finished on 239-7 giving Bashley a winning draw & 16 points which puts them in second position behind Havant.
Hampshire Academy v Bashley Rydal 30 May 2009
BASHLEY (RYDAL)216-9 V Hampshire Academy 156
On the warmest day of the year Bashley travelled to play at the Rose Bowl against the Hampshire Academy who, although a young side, had several players with first team experience. It was a day of a hat trick of firsts for Bashley, skipper Andy Neal won the toss for the first time, Bashley scoring over 200 runs for the first time this season & for the first time in his career wicket keeper Dan Friedman had seven victims in an innings, six caught behind & one stumping, a great achievment.
On winning the toss Bashley elected to bat first with Chris Jones & Neil Thurgood opening, the first wicket falling at 20, that of N. Thurgood (2).Richard Morris joined Jones & with a mixture of good running & great shots took the score to 99 when Morris was caught off the leg spin bowling
of Miller for 25. Jones proceeded to show his class but holed out to be caught in the deep for a fine 81. Nick Baker continues to grow in confidence & it showed as he settled in & scored an invaluable 40 with various partners, notably Andy Neal (13) & then Ross Grierson (12 n.o.). The innings closed on 216 for 9 with Ben Howell being the pick of the Academy bowlers with 3-31.
The Hampshire reply fairly rattled along with South African Kleinvelt dominating the opening attack of King & Nash until in the 17th over Andy Neal ripped out his leg stump & he departed for an aggressive 50 & the score stood at 72-2. After this it became the Dan Friedman show as he took 3 cathes off the bowling of Kevin Nash (3-28) 2 from Gavin Bailiff (3-24, 1 off Andy Neal & a stumping off the left arm spin of Ross Grierson. Chris Wood tried in vain to bring the Academy into contention all to no
avail especially when Matt King clean bowled him their innings affectively ended & they finished on 156 in the 41st over leaving Bashley winners by 60 runs. After this terrific performance Bashley can look forward to the all day matches starting on Saturday with Winchester side, St. Cross being the
visitors to the BCG.
Bashley Rydal v Alton 23 May 2009
In a closely fought contest Alton won the toss and chose to bat on a lovely warm sunny dat at the BCG. The opening pair of Hale and Myers got off to a rapid start before Kevin Nash had Myers caught by keeper Dan Friedman for 7, this brought the dangerous ex-pro Dave Taylor(20)to the crease and he
quickly showed his class with some exspansive drives until he tried one too many against the admirable Nash, who finished with 4-47, and again Friedman took a good catch. Hale continued to play a well controlled innings (55) before he too fell to a Friedman catch this time off the bowling of skipper
Andy Neal(2-25). With Alton captain Mark Hefferman batting the score continued to move along, mainly to some superb running between the wicket with all his partners playing their part as he finished on 37 not out and the total on 200. All the bowlers stuck to their task backed up again by some excellent fielding and catching with spinners Ross Grierson (1-30), Nick Baker (1-16) and Andy Sexton (2-29) enjoying the warm conditions.
The Bashley reply started slowly against the accurate Alton bowling attack of Taylor & Pang-Kessler who trapped N. Thurgood lbw for 2 and Andy Sexton & Chris Jones set about building the innings & they took the score to 46 when Sexton was out for 16. In form Richard Morris (35) joined Jones(30) and the
two top scorers played the Alton attack, which was being changed round all the time, well. These bowling changes & the tight aggressive field placings meant that the Bashley batsmen never allowed to settled into any rhythm.N.Baker (20) A.Neal (26) & Gavin Bailiff(27) all made good starts but
no one went on to make a big score that would have brought a victory. The tail did not contribute many & the innings closed on 185 to lose by 15 runs. The pick of Altons bowling was spinner Julian Ballinger who finished with 5-36 backed up by the outstanding all rounder, Taylor 3-20. The decisive
factors contributing to Altons win was not only the excellent running between wickets but the fact that they only gave 5 extras, all wides as opposed to Bashleys 15 made up off no balls & wides, lessons to be learnt in such tight matches.
Andover v Bashley Rydal 16 May 2009
Bashley traveled to Andover making one enforced change to the team that won last week at South Wilts, Gavin Bailiff coming in for Max Waller who was making his full county debut for Somerset in a Friends Provident match at Taunton.Bashley batted first on a cold blustery day in a match that
was reduced to 45 overs per side because of the weather.Neil Thurgood opened with Chris Jones, who went after scoring 10, but Thurgood rode his luck on his way to making 64 and together with Richard Morris who top scored with a fluent 69 put Bashley into a healthy position considering the conditions.
Gavin Bailiff consolidated this with a brisk 37 and the innings closed with Andover requiring 200 to win off their 45 overs.
Greg Jones & Kevin Nash opened the bowling for Bashley with Nash being virtually unplayable getting bounce & pace off a green wicket & finished his 10 over spell with 1-20. Bailiff replaced Jones & bowling into the wind returned the excellent figures of 2-23 removing Andovers numbers 3 & 4. A. Hooper played some excellent cuts & pull shots before being bowled by Ross Grierson for 45.Skipper Roger Miller came to the crease & played some fine shots scoring 35 when he was caught in the deep off the leg spin bowling of Nick Baker who finished with the superb figures of 4-31. W. Khan hit a quick 26 before he became another Baker victim & the innings was ended on 162. Again the fielding & catching was superb & typical of this was a run out when Chris Jones hurled the ball in from all of 80 yards & keeper Dan Fiedman, who had an excellent game, whipped the bails off in flash to run out the dangerous Taylor. A Bashley victory by 37 runs in the 42nd over.
South Wilts v Bashley Rydal 9 May 2009
After the dissapointment of losing to Lymington last week Bashley (Rydal) priduced a terrific team performance to beat South Wilts by 7 wickets at Lower Bemerton in a 50 overs per side SEPL game. South Wilts won the toss & decided to bat first & the opening pair of T. Morton & S.
Riddle started well against the new ball attack of Greg Jones & Kevin Nash before Riddle was lbw to Jones for 15 in the 5th over & the score on 20. Rob Wade fell lbw to Max Waller for 4, & Waller went on to bowl a superb 10 overs of leg spin taking 2 wickets for just 9 runs Morton scored an aggressive 33 but was was bowled by skipper Andy Neal after 15 overs & the score w2as then 60-3. Wiltshire captain James Hibberd came to the crease & showed his class on a slow wicket crafting a well
worked 42 not out, but had little support from the rest of his team mates & the innings closed in the 43rd over with the total on 138. All the Bashley bowlers contributing, G. Jones 2-42, K. Nash 2-29, M. Waller 2-9, A. Neal 3-22& R. Grierson 1-22. These were backed up by some high quality catching & ground fielding. The Bashley innings got off to a steady start with Chris Jones & Max Waller looking comfortable until Jones was bowled by Wade for a solid 39 in the 16th over & the score on 58.Neil Thurgood came in at no.3 but fell lbw to J Hayward without troubling the scorers & the score at 70-2.
Last weeks top scorer Richard Morris joined Waller, who by now was playing with great exhuberance & together they took the score to 129 when Morris was caught off S. Beetham for 12. Waller then took the matters in to his own hands & sealed a fine Man of the Match performance scoring 61 not out.
A much improved Bashley performance & they can travel to Andover next Saturday with renewed confidence.
